The fairytale of a movie, the first feature-length for León and Cociña, tells the story of Maria, a young woman who has recently escaped from Colonia Dignidad. She seeks shelter in a house with two farm animals, but soon enough her nightmares reemerge — this time in a more supernatural way. The story here, such as it is, is less of a linear fairy tale with a tidy morale at the end than an oozing transference of concern from Maria to her kids.

Even Maria herself is altered and cracked open a number of times, as her image sways between a tree and a chirpy yellow bird. María, an idle and irresponsible girl living in the isolated Colony, flees into the woods rather than face the community's punishment for failing to contribute. She narrowly escapes a pursuing wolf by taking refuge in an abandoned house. The house plant shows small terraces at different levels, located between the panes of window walls and stone walls. Each of these carries a main living terraces, as the living room.

She stumbles upon an abandoned house in the woods and uses it as a hiding place, both from her fellow community members and from a wolf that is now stalking her. As the wolf howls outside, Maria narrates her life for us, claiming to be able to transform her world into whatever she wants, but the dreadful, unsettling transformations happening to her and her surroundings don’t match her rosy descriptions. Soon she discovers two pigs inside that she adopts as her children, creating her own little commune in her mind. She feeds the pigs the colony’s honey and they morph into humans who then want to eat Maria, the mental commune she made for herself thus turning against her.
The walls, perpendicular to the slope, stand like a rock over the mountain, adapting to the environment. They are built in zigzag and resistant not only to landslides, earthquakes also common in the area. The trees continue to grow on both sides of the bedrooms and terraces of the living room, in some cases between the glass and the structure as above the deck. London hired San Francisco architect Albert L. Farr to design the home. Farr was a leading exponent of Arts and Crafts architecture in California.
The 73-minute feature is a labor of love from León and Cociña, who worked for years and in many different countries to see their vision come to life, according to press notes. The two filmmakers relied on their shared cultural and personal history, both having grown up in Chile. They have been working together since 2007, and, although this is their first feature-length, the directorial duo have had their short films and work exhibited at festivals and museums for a number of years.

Men and women were separated from one another, and all members of the Colonia were forced to confess their sins to the almighty Schäfer. Those who ended up leaving the Colonia spoke about it as a place of authoritarian rule and severe isolationist principles. Unsurprisingly, many also reported incidents of torture and abuse. “I will teach you everything I know.” Even at this early juncture those words land on your ears like the gravest of threats, and their echoes only grow louder as the characters dematerialize and reassemble. The shifting interior of the building takes shape before our eyes, only to mutate every time we look at it. A physical wooden door opens into a blank room where two-dimensional furniture is being drawn on the walls as Maria watches it take shape. A window pane seems to resemble a swastika for a moment before it turns into a square, but that must be your mind playing tricks on you. Cociña and León brilliantly portray the ever-evolving nature of dreams, continuously switching up the look of their world and the perspective from which we view it, thereby magnifying the falsity of the truth it preaches.
But, despite Maria’s goals, the house is quite similar to the Colonia Dignidad. But, in the end, the wolf is revealed to not be exactly what he seems. When he “eats” Maria’s pig-children (yuck), they are actually just turned into trees. This idea of non-literal consumption suggests that the wolf isn’t literal either, instead just acting as a symbol of something less physical that largely exists in the minds of Maria and her children. The first era of Colonia Dignidad began when Paul Schäfer, a German man accused of child molestation, moved to Chile in 1961 with the goal of abandoning his past and creating a perfect commune focused on agriculture, spirituality, and purity.

Due to the mass amount of misinformation and secrecy surrounding much of Pinochet’s rule, the full extent of Colonia Dignidad’s atrocities aren’t really known. It’s thought that hundreds were murdered there, but it’s still debated. Schäfer’s level of involvement and cooperation is still mostly unknown. As the years went on, the Colonia grew and Schäfer became more like a cult leader.
In a permanent loop of hallucinatory action aided by eerie sounds and musical cues, the duo recurrently establishes their own aesthetic reality, only to abandon and redefine it seconds later with jaw-dropping inventiveness. As both handmade puppet-like figures and animated drawings, pigs materialize from the floorboards of Maria’s house, but turn into a pair of kids with animal limbs later. Equal parts stage play, performance art and expressionist sci-fi cinematic experience, “The Hyperboreans” presents an ambitiously singular sensory overhaul. The cozy and private space features ample built-in, copper-wrapped seating.
It was impressive to see what the property would have looked like. Now, his mural for the public school’s library will go on display for the first time.
